A Study of the Self-Esteem, Powerlessness and Dependency in the Elderly


Abstract
This study was designed to identify degree of self-esteem, powerlessness, and dependency and to investigate the relationship among them.
The purpose of this study was to promote quality of life and successful aging on the base of understanding of self-esteem, powerlessness, dependency in the elderly.
Data were collected from July 20 to August 10, 1998 through individual interviews using a structured questionnaire.
The tool for self-esteem was the Self-Esteem Scale - developed by Rosenberg(1965), and the tool for powerlessness was the Powerlessness Assessment Tool(Chung, 1998), and the tool for dependency was the Social Dependency Scale(Benoliel, McCorkle & Young, 1980).
Data was analyzed by the SPSS Win program and included descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, Stepwise Multiful Regression.
The conclusion of this study are summarized as follows;
1. The mean score of self-esteem was 33.32 in a range of 18 to 50, and the mean score of powerlessness was 87.29 in a range of 27 to 127, and the mean score of dependency was 17.66 in a range of 12 to 60.
2. First, general charactrristics related to the degree of self-esteem was age, educational level, employment status, spouse¢¥s presence, income level, satisfation level about income, family pattern, experience of hospitalization. Then, general charactrristics related to the degree of powerlessness was age, sex, educational level, employ- merit status, spouse¢¥s presence, income level. Finally, general charactrristics related to the degree of dependency was age, spouse¢¥s presence, family pattern.
3. There were significant negative correlation between self-esteem and powerlwssness(r=-.298, p=.000), self- esteem and dependency(r=-.483, p=.000). There was a significant positive correlation between powerlwssness and dependency(r=.445, p=.000). Also two independent variable, self-esteem and powerlessness are, in order, signifant determinants of dependency in the elderly.
